A Winning Master stroke

When Hitesh Jeswani joined NUS Business School to pursue a full-time MBA, the last thing he expected was to bring honour to the university within his year here.

Hitesh NUS Chess Championship

Hitesh, who hails from India, was part of the NUS Chess team trio that won the Silver award in the Inter-University Chess Championship. With the other two members from diverse backgrounds and cultures – NUS Engineering student Batuhan Sutbas from Turkey and NUS Arts student Zeliang from Singapore – Hitesh believes this was the most diverse team he has ever been a part of.

Organised by Singapore Polytechnic, the tournament saw stiff competition among 16 teams from colleges such as Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic and  National University of Singapore. The teams played ‘Rapid Chess’ in a Swiss-league format of six rounds, of which the NUS team  swept five, with a 3-0 victory. The team lost one match to Singapore Polytechnic Team A with a score line of 1-0, costing it the Gold award.

“When I came to NUS, I was delighted to find that NUS had an active Chess Club and a strong varsity team with some highly rated players.  (The tournament) was a great experience for me and brought back memories of the Chess tournaments I used to play back home in India,” says Hitesh.
