Held since 2008, this annual conference brings together Fung Scholars and Fellows from 27 universities in Hong Kong and China, Singapore, USA, UK, Switzerland, Canada and Bangladesh, to discuss the pressing issues of the day.
The theme for this year’s Conference, “Leadership in the Service Era”, is in response to the economic transition of many countries from a manufacturing to service-oriented economy, resulting in different skill sets needed. Participants had a chance to discuss with leading practitioners the theories and concepts of service leadership in practice.
The Fung scholarships are given out by the William and Victor Fung Foundation which was established at the centenary of the Fung Group in 2006. The Fund provides scholarships to undergraduates to participate in global exchange programmes and gain exposure to diverse cultures and environments.
This is the first time the Conference is held in Singapore, and at NUS Business School, to mark the 50th Anniversary of the School.
The “homeliness” of the occasion was brought home by several things. NUS President Tan Chorh Chuan made the opening remarks, while the emcees on that day were our own students who were Fung Scholars, Phua Mei Qi (batch of 2013) and Lim Jin Ming (batch of 2015). Our own Professor Michael Frese was one of the two conference speakers of the day and our student, Cheung Ho Yeung, flew back specially from his NUS Overseas Colleges stint in California, to share his entrepreneurial experience.
